General Aim

The aim of this class is to explore how digital platforms can facilitate collaborative forms of learning aligned with the commons approach.

Learning outcomes

  • Understand how to identify such educational platforms/online communities of commoners.

  • Recognise the differences with conventional online educational platforms.

  • Understand how to use the platforms and how to contribute (e.g., join or set up a new course) or propose improvements.

Brief description

In this class, we will discuss the main characteristics of educational platforms of the commons and browse through characteristic examples.

At the end of this class, students will be able to recognise such platforms and understand how they differ from conventional ones.

  • See the social aspects of digital commons.
  • Understand how one can cooperate in a collaborative environment towards a common goal by using the concept of Hackathons.
  • Think critically through a needs-based approach.
  • Apply the logic of the commons to develop collective interventions.
  • Build on and Utilize creatively knowledge that is “out there”, e.g. knowledge shared openly from commoners communities.
  • Help and get helped from open-source communities.
  • Promote values such as multiculturalism, gender perspective, tolerance, etc., through the educational commons.
  • Understanding the potential of platforms as tools for blended, self-organised, collaborative learning

Brief description

We will interview Emmanouli (Manolis) Levedianos who is part of the team of the “Ludd” makerspace to get a glimpse of what a makerspace is, what projects they do, what challenges they face and how they see the future.
Then we will interview Lucía Benitez Eyzaguirre, a professor at the University of Cadiz. Lucia will speak to us about digital commons, active citizenship and hackathons (Hackathon is a fusion of the terms “hacking” and “marathon”. Hackathon is based on collaboration, leading to the creation of shared and common proposals and resolution of problems through innovation)
